The History of the MD SPCA

The Maryland SPCA is one of the nation’s oldest animal welfare organizations, founded in 1869 by a group of Baltimore citizens who were concerned about the welfare of the City’s work horses. For decades, the MD SPCA provided water and emergency care to work horses that were used to pull wagons in daily commerce and investigated complaints about their treatment.

Maryland SPCA Education and Outreach Program

The Maryland SPCA Education and Outreach program is an initiative to promote community giving and education in animal welfare issues. Community Outreach and Education programs are an important component of their mission. From the beginning, their outreach initiatives have been inspired by staff and volunteer desires to help people and pets in need and to motivate community interest in compassion for animals. There are many ways to participate. The MD SPCA’s educational outreach initiatives offer the opportunity to provide classroom (regional K–12 schools) and other group settings a one-on-one experience with their staff and even their Outreach Doggie Embassador.
